When Sis met The Hurricane

Sis had opinions. And she loved to hear opinions from others. Age Friendly Thunder Bay hosted a gathering of seniors to determine priority needs that could be addressed to improve the lives of citizens. Sis attended. She was in the front row. She was especially keen to hear the key note address delivered by a Canadian icon, Mayor Hazel McCallion, the long-time Mayor of the City of Mississauga.

After Hazel's speech I had the honour of thanking her in front of an audience of 100+ attendees. I pointed out that Sis was 97 and made the effort to come out to hear Hazel. With that, Hazel jumped off the stage, crossed the floor and gave my mom a big hug. As she was on the march to meet Sis she said "I want to know what it's like to be 97!" This is an attitude we can all adopt. We want to know what we can learn from others - no matter their age. Well done Hazel. Well done Sis. And, by the way, Hazel was 95 when she wanted to know what it was like to be 97!

Thanks to Sandi Krasowski from The Chronicle Journal for capturing this photo of the embrace! It's a keeper. Be curious - just like "Hurricane" Hazel.
